Ok, so maybe loser is a bit harsh. But he definitely wasn’t a prize that everyone turned their heads to see and say “Wow, I want that horse!” Nor was he the type to even look like true competition. When we walked into the show grounds it looked more like I had accidentally trailered in my pregnant barrel horse. But given the chance to trade my experience with him for some wonderfully trained warmblood that wins all the ribbons, and I would most definitely turn it down every time. Clearly Reef and I haven’t been on the same wavelength when it comes to stadium. He’s a green horse and I have a lot of issues when it comes to that particular arena. We excel in cross country and are quite capable of holding our own in dressage, but I morph into a whole other person when I ride in stadium. HOWEVER, a miracle has occurred! We ride 1000 pound animals that are so sensitive they can feel a tiny fly on them. We sit on their backs and ask them to move gracefully under us as well as jump hurdles ahead. We ask them to be balanced and athletic, yet we aren’t remotely balanced enough in our seat to help them jump the way they could without a rider on them. This past weekend was Rolex and wow was it a show! Michael Jung won for the second year in a row on Fischerrocana FST by a landslide. He is now headed to Badminton this coming weekend in attempt to win the Grand Slam (won only once ever by Pippa Funnell in 2003). We definitely wish him the best of luck!
